Cotton Flannel

Cotton flannel is made for a soft, warm first touch. Its surface has a light nap: fine raised fibers make the fabric fluffier and help hold a layer of air close to the body. These are the pajamas you reach for on a chilly evening.

How Flannel Feels

Soft, matte, lightly fluffy. It feels more voluminous than smooth cotton weave and less cool than smooth viscose silk. How pronounced the nap is depends on the specific fabric.

How Warm Is It

The nap helps insulate, which is why flannel is a favorite for fall, winter, and cool rooms. If you overheat easily or sleep in a very warm room, light cotton or muslin may be more comfortable.

Pilling and Changes After Washing

The nap is made of raised fibers, so a little shedding is possible during wear and the first washes. Small pills may form where there’s friction, and the surface gradually becomes less fluffy. Hot water and high-heat drying can increase shrinkage.

Caring for the Nap

  • If the label allows, wash gently up to 86°F (30°C) with a mild color detergent.
  • Turn the pajamas inside out and wash separately from denim, towels, and hook-and-loop fasteners.
  • Avoid overloading, high spin speeds, and hard wringing.
  • Air dry and don’t over-dry on a radiator. Tumble dry only as the label allows.
  • Iron inside out if needed, without pressing the nap down hard.

Who It’s For

For those who get cold at night and love cozy, matte fabrics with a gentle nap. For a richer, velvety surface, compare with cotton-based velour.

We make kids’ pajamas, women’s pajama pants sets, men’s pajamas, and matching sets for the whole family in flannel. Similar warm fabrics: brushed cotton and cotton-based velour.
